West Virginia truck safety panel seeks enforcement changes

A panel reviewing truck weight issues in West Virginia has decided to add enforcement to the responsibilities of an existing Public Service Commission program. The panel's decision also gives the state police access to shipping and receiving records while investigating truck accidents.

The Governor's Truck Safety Work Group previously acted favorably to a suggestion of creating a new Office of Truck Safety and Enforcement, which would take over the truck enforcement efforts of two separate offices. The new agency would combine the state Transportation Department's weight enforcement program and the PSC's truck inspection program into a single office.

PSC Chairman Jim Williams advised the work group to instead recommend the Legislature simply add a weight enforcement program to the PSC's transportation section, leaving the safety inspection program untouched. The Legislature must adopt the recommendation before it can take effect.
