DOT reveals newest list of All-American roads, scenic byways

| Friday, June 14, 2002

Driving out on the open road provides truckers an opportunity to see beautiful landscape throughout the nation. To help drivers enjoy the stories and treasured places America has to offer, the Department of Transportation has unveiled its newest list of 13 All-American Roads and 23 National Scenic Byways.

"America's Byways are roads to the heart and soul of America," said Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta. "Byways help create a sense of pride in America. They connect us to this country's beauty, history and culture."

To receive an All-American Road designation, "a road must possess multiple intrinsic qualities" that are nationally significant and offer one-of-a-kind features that don't exist elsewhere. The road or highway must also be considered a "destination unto itself," providing an "exceptional traveling experience so recognized by travelers that they would make a drive along the highway a primary reason for their trip."

In addition to designations, about $25 million is available annually from the Federal Highway Administration for planning as well as enhancing and promoting the byways. With these new designations, there are 75 National Scenic Byways and 20 All-American Roads in 39 states, including nine with portions in more than one state.
