Weather not an issue for show trucks at Boston show

Moved inside for the first time in the show's history, the show truck competition at the 30th Annual North American Truck Show (NATS) at Bayside Expo Center in Boston May 2-4, drew a record number of spectators to see, admire and vote for their favorite combos and bobtails. The event was the latest in the series of Stars & Stripes Show Truck Events, sponsored by NATS, Newport Communications and PPG Paints. The People's Choice was a very tough race. Every truck entered in the show received votes - the competitors were not allowed to cast ballots. Donnie and Diana Harper, OOIDA members from Somerset, KY, led the bobtail pack. Their truck , "Enduring Freedom," features murals depicting scenes from the events of September 11. While competing in Boston, Donnie, a former firefighter, was visited by members of the Boston Fire Department, including one who helped pull one of the only victims found alive from the rubble at the World Trade Center. Tears flowed freely as they spoke of that day's events and those that followed. "People come and talk to me about what happened and where they were," said Harper. "I can't hold back the tears - and I don't want to." Across the room, at Rhett Butler Trucking's "Miss Scarlett," Rhett, his wife Lynn and driver Larry Weaver dressed in antebellum costumes that wowed the crowd. At the awards ceremony, in addition to the plaques and trophies, there were a couple of first-time competitors who received special recognition. For Devon Nigel Stephens, it was his first truck show. OOIDA member Darian Stephens, Hereford, PA, and Georganne Beck are the proud parents. He arrived a month before his due date, weighing in at 5 lbs. 7 oz. Thanks to Devon's timely arrival, Darian was able to get his truck cleaned up and entered in the show - he had not expected to be able to attend - and win Best of Show Bobtail. And he's already teaching Devon how to do "wax on, wax off." The littlest competitor has now received his first award - and we're sure there will be many more to follow as he learns from his dad how to detail a truck.
