The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall on 30,000 Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star trucks for a part that could overheat or ignite.

On certain trucks, a capacitor in the power line carrier (PLC) filter could overheat and/or ignite when subjected to reverse polarity electrical spikes.

Models affected are Freightliner FLD, Freightliner Century Class, Sterling Acterra, Western Star 4900, Western Star 5900, and Western Star 6900, all model year 2001 manufactured between February and November 2001.

Dealers will disconnect and secure the PLC filter ground wire. Owner notification was expected to begin in May. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Freightliner at 1-800-547-0712.
