Cummins Inc. said May 21 that it submitted its 5.9 liter medium duty ISB engine for certification to the Environmental Protection Agency's 2.5-gram NOx+NMHC standard, which takes effect October 1, 2002.
Production will begin upon receipt of the certification, which is expected early this summer, the company said. Cummins introduced the ISB in Europe more than a year ago. The company added a cooled exhaust gas re-circulation subsystem to meet the EPA emissions standard.
Thomas Kieffer, executive director of Marketing at Cummins: "Customers will love this engine because they can maintain their maintenance intervals, have better performance and up to 2 percent better fuel economy."
