The House voted 306-117 May 8 to force Nevada to provide nuclear waste storage from around the country at Yucca Mountain, about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, AP reported.
Opponents including Nevada's governor now must hope the Senate will turn the plan down. They say it's not safe to transport nuclear waste by rail and truck.
Senate action on the White House-backed plan is expected in the next few months. If eventually approved, the Yucca facility would open in 2010.
