Virginia to study second Potomac crossing

| Monday, May 06, 2002

Gov. Mark Warner announced Tuesday a proposal to study an additional Potomac River crossing to ease highway gridlock in Northern Virginia.

Warner told WTOP radio the $400,000 study would consider constructing a "Techway" bridge over the Potomac along the "outer loop" of the Capital Beltway that would give drivers another route between Virginia and Maryland.

The study coincides with the beginning of Warner's campaign for a referendum in Northern Virginia to increase the state sales tax by a half-cent to fund highway and mass-transit projects.
