SC governor sues feds to halt plutonium truck shipments

South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges this week sued the U.S. Department of Energy and Secretary Spencer Abraham to modify plans to ship some 76 truckloads of plutonium from Colorado to a site on the Savannah River, Reuters reported.

Hodges' suit claims the Energy Department failed to file the appropriate environmental impact statements. The governor wants the court to block the shipments until the federal government complies with the law.

Since mid-April, Hodges has protested plans to bring the nuclear material to South Carolina unless the government guarantees not to leave it there permanently.

According to Reuters, Hodges has said he fears that unless a legally enforceable agreement is reached on when the plutonium will be removed from the state, South Carolina could become a permanent dumping ground for the material.
