Dayton cracks down on truckers

| Friday, May 03, 2002

Dayton police and Ohio Highway Patrol inspectors kicked off a six-month campaign Thursday targeting overweight trucks. In only five hours, authorities reportedly had issued 21 citations and removed seven big rigs from service.

Authorities set up a temporary weigh station on Arena Park Drive off Edwin C. Moses Boulevard and scouted for trucks within a 3-mile radius along Interstate 75, U.S. 35 and in the neighborhoods around Stony Hollow landfill. Mechanical inspectors checking brakes, lights, tires and other functions also were on hand to look for any violations.

The operation is scheduled to continue one or two days a week through October. Locations of the weigh station and enforcement zone will vary.
