Thumbs down on ANWR/steelworker drilling deal

| Wednesday, April 17, 2002

Proponents of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge were dealt a blow April 16 as a last ditch effort failed to gain enough votes for passage. Hoping to sway Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and other senators with steelworker constituents, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) offered to use oil lease royalties to pay for health care benefits for retired steelworkers.

But the deal failed. Drilling for oil in ANWR is already in the House-passed energy reform bill and will be on he table for discussion during House-Senate negotiations even if it fails in the Senate.
