Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted part
of a March 21, 2001 petition from OOIDA alleging safety defects
in heavy-duty trucks made by Volvo Trucks North America.
part of the petition that was denied was not totally unexpected
given the broad nature of the complaints," said OOIDA President
NHTSA opened its investigation in December 2001 of trucks made
between 1998 and 2000, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers
Association (OOIDA) wanted a larger investigation covering nine
problem areas on 1989 to 2000 model year trucks.
April 9 Federal Register notice, NHTSA said it is investigating
only steering defects and steer axle U-bolt failures on VN-610,
660 and 770 series trucks built during 1999-2000. NHTSA already
has an investigation underway regarding alleged real axle U-bolt
problems on 1998-2000 VN-610, 660, and 700-series trucks.
NHTSA has asked Volvo to expand its voluntary recall initiated
last March to include an investigation of possible front axle
problems in all of Volvo's trucks.
