a Call to Action this week, urging Illinois members to take
decisive action regarding the critical trucker issue of split
speed limits. Illinois state representatives will have the opportunity
to end split speed limits when they return to Springfield on
April 1. House Bill 5912 has already cleared the House chamber
twice with the third and final reading possible as early as
April 1.So far, the legislation introduced by Representative
Raymond Poe has encountered little opposition but time is running
out. If HB 5912 does not receive a third favorable reading on
the House floor by April 5, the measure is done for this year.
Once the House passes the legislation, the measure moves on
to the state Senate for its consideration. "We are asking
Illinois members to phone and/or fax their state representative
and urge their support of HB5912," says OOIDA Executive
Vice President Todd Spencer. "Highways will always be safest
when all vehicles are traveling at the same speeds."
representatives can be reached through the capitol switchboard
at (217) 782-2000. If you don't know the name of your state
representative you can call the OOIDA membership department
at 1-800-444-5791 to obtain that information.
area truckers could also boost chances for this bill to pass
by calling Representative Michael Madigan, the Speaker of the
House. Speaker Madigan sets the schedule for which bills are
considered. Representative Madigan can be reached at (217) 782-5350
or by fax at (217) 524-1794.
would also be a good time to alert your state Senator that HB
5912 will be coming to them soon and to urge their support of
uniform speed limit legislation," says Spencer.
