Nine caught hiding underneath truck at border

Nine Polish immigrants, including two children, were taken into custody early Wednesday after a botched attempt to smuggle themselves across the Ambassador Bridge by hiding underneath a semi.

The group reportedly was holding on beneath a semi-trailer as it crossed the bridge into Detroit. When officials pulled the truck over for a routine paperwork check, the driver became nervous and instructed the group to run.

A woman in the group was struck by another tractor-trailer as she allegedly tried to hide underneath. She was pinned beneath the truck and suffered a broken leg.

A spokesman for the local customs and excise union told news reporters that the "smart border" action plan signed Wednesday by U.S. and Canadian officials likely would not have netted the immigrants. The plan allows trucks loaded with goods bound for either country to be pre-cleared to go into a fast lane helping to speed the flow of trade across the border.
