Temporary layoffs for International workers

International Truck and Engine Corp. will halt line production for one week at its Springfield assembly plant, sending about 400 people home from their jobs. Employees were told Nov. 28 that "line one" will shut down Dec. 10-14.

Kyle Rose, spokesman for International's Springfield operations, said a lack of orders prompted the shutdown. Slow sales have been felt across the industry. Line one produces International's new models, the 4000 series, and school buses. Production will continue on line two, which produces the company's Legacy series, including trucks that International is currently building, but is in the process of phasing out. Line one produces 127 units a day, and line two builds 53 units a day, Rose said.
