About 3,000 United Auto
Workers at Mack Trucks donated 6,000 hours last week to build seven chassis
for New York City police and firefighters. The donated chassis were built
at plants along the East Coast. Five of the chassis will go to the city's
fire department, and the two others will go to police.
Workers clocked in before
dawn to put in the extra hours, worth about $120,000. Specialized companies
outside Mack will convert the donated chassis into fire trucks and police
emergency vehicles. The date when the city will take possession of the trucks
is not yet known.
Immediately following
the Sept. 11 attack, Mack loaned the city six new trucks to replace those
lost in the rubble.
