Arizona town seeks realigned truck route

Arizona highway officials are rethinking the route of a long time proposed truck diversion in order to bypass a housing development. Sahuarita city officials say the proposed route is unacceptable.

The 17-mile, $170 million roadway is designed to provide an alternative route between Interstates 10 and 19, especially for truck traffic. It would cut through a 10,680-home development. Both the housing development and the four- to six-lane highway have been in the planning stages for years, but now the subdivision is nearing completion. To avoid further turmoil, the state Transportation Department has prepared a new road alignment proposal that would take the highway north of the original route, bypassing the housing development.
