International laying off 400

International Truck and Engine Corp. plans to layoff 400 workers at one of its Springfield, OH, plants on Nov. 19. The layoffs were prompted by declines of about 30 percent in the medium-duty truck business this year, according to The Springfield News-Sun.

Some of the laid-off employees, who will include union, nonunion and salaried workers, may choose early retirement, a company spokesman told the newspaper. The company couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be additional layoffs in the future.

The company also said it would idle one assembly line at the plant for a week beginning Nov. 5. The decision affects 400 additional workers.
