South Carolina truck-related fatalities drop

The number of fatalities and collisions involving big rigs on South Carolina's state roadways dropped 25 percent from 1999 to 2000. According to the Fatal Accident Analysis Reporting System, only three other states, Hawaii, North Dakota and Rhode Island, showed greater improvements. The number of fatalities also dropped from 166 in 1990 to 89 in 2000. The statistics track collisions involving trucks over 10,000 pounds gross weight and are compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
