Nationwide alert: Rig carrying fertilizer, pesticide stolen

| Thursday, October 18, 2001

Authorities issued a nationwide alert Wednesday for a stolen tractor-trailer in New Jersey carrying a load of fertilizer and pesticide. Police say they have no reason to suspect the truck, which had placards identifying its cargo as hazardous materials, was stolen by terrorists.

The truck was stolen Tuesday night or Wednesday morning from the loading dock of Rockland Corp. in Parsippany, NJ. The theft comes as heightened nationwide concern over the possible use of hazardous materials trucks in terrorist attacks.

The 45-foot trailer had been loaded Tuesday with landscaping products, primarily limestone, The Star-Ledger reported. It also carried lawn fertilizer and liquid pesticide.

The 2000 Freightliner cab is described as yellow, with the word "Penske" on the side and bears Indiana registration 171469. The 45-foot white 1998 Freuhauf trailer has "Rockland" in green letters on all four sides with New Jersey registration T392VD. Anyone with information should call the Parsippany police at (973) 263-4300.
