Virginia troopers protecting bridge tunnels

| Tuesday, October 09, 2001

Virginia State Police are adding troopers to four bridge-tunnels near Hampton Roads to inspect commercial vehicles. The troopers will be on site around the clock in an effort to reduce the risk of possible terrorist strikes in the area.

Troopers will be assigned to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel, the Midtown Tunnel and Downtown Tunnel "on a 24-hour basis," The (Newport News) Daily Press reported. The bridge-tunnels will be guarded by two troopers at a time working in shifts for a total of eight officers at a time. Additionally, at least one motor carrier trooper will be assigned to handle mechanical and regulatory issues relating to hazardous materials at each location.

No troopers will be at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia Beach because it is privately owned and has its own police force.
