Pittsburgh tunnel closed for weekend

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is shutting down the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel this weekend for construction. Both the inbound and outbound tunnels of Pittsburgh's busiest road - part of Interstate 279 - will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Sunday as part of electrical, ventilation and safety work.

The official detour posted for this work includes both directions of the following routes:

Route 51 North to the West End Circle across the West End Bridge to 279 North to the Fort Duquesne Bridge to I-376 (Parkway East)
Route 51 South to the Liberty tunnels across the Liberty Bridge
Route 51 North to the West End Circle to Route 837 (Carson Street) to the Smithfield Street BridgeFuture closures of the outbound lanes of the tunnel:

10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 to noon on Sunday, Oct. 14.
10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29.The inbound lane of the tunnel is to be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 27.
