In the days since the apparent terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, beefed up security is causing delays throughout the United States, including the borders. Delays at the Canadian border crossings have commercial vehicles experiencing 12-14 hour waits and beefed up inspections.

Martin Cauchon, the minister in charge of Customs, said Canada had taken heightened security of its border crossings, but people and merchandise were moving between the two countries.

"Tuesday night it took three hours just to get from one edge of the Blue Water Bridge to the Customs booth on the other side," says owner-operator Bob Esler, Taylor, MI. "Trucks are being delayed 12-14 hours today. My advice would be to have plenty of fuel, drinks and something to eat. Plan for an extended wait."

Trade between the two countries is valued at more than C$1 billion a day.
