DOT wastes no time in recovery effort

Last night, in an official statement, Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta said, "Our system has been severely burdened by the stress of these horrendous attacks, but we will recover." Secretary Mineta vowed to restore to each American, the freedom and ability to move freely and safely throughout the nation. He promised to restore that freedom promptly and with the highest possible degree of safety.

At 2:30 a.m. EST today, a press release was issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation announcing that the department is "open for business Wednesday Sept. 12, ready to perform any tasks necessary to restore our national transportation system to a safe, efficient status." The DOT said it is working closely with the White House and appropriate federal agencies to mount a coordinated, nationwide recovery effort.
