Marathon Ashland Petroleum (MAP), through its wholly owned retail unit Speedway SuperAmerica (SSA) LLC, and Pilot Corp. have finalized a transaction combining their travel center operations into Pilot Travel Centers LLC. The first day of operations for the new company was Sept. 1.

MAP and Pilot will each have a 50 percent interest in Pilot Travel Centers LLC. The new venture reportedly creates the largest travel center network in the nation with more than 235 locations. The new company, based in Knoxville, TN, will have about 11,000 employees.

Enion, OH-based SSA is the nation's second largest company owned and operated convenience store chain with more than 2,250 stores located in 20 states. Most of the stores are operated under the Speedway and SuperAmerica brand names. The privately owned Pilot Corp., based in Knoxville, operates about 70 convenience stores in Tennessee and Virginia, in addition to about 140 travel centers.
