Malone to sponsor monster truck race team

The NBA's No. 2 all-time scorer Karl Malone is on a new team. This team has nothing at all to do with basketball.

The Utah Jazz player and former long-haul trucker Karl Malone announced on Aug. 29, at the Delta Center that he will partner with Clear Channel Entertainment to own the Power Forward Monster Truck Race Team. Malone will own, operate and drive a monster truck on the U.S. Hot Rod Association's Monster Jam circuit.

Malone, also known as The "Mailman," said in a press conference that his truck is under construction and will make its debut in January at a USHA/Clear Channel Monster Jam at the Houston Astrodome. Chad Fortune has been named official driver, but Malone will drive during basketball's off-season. He is scheduled to race at the Delta Center Jan. 18-19.

"This is my escape," Malone told the Salt Lake Tribune. "This is what excites me. I love speed. I love big machines. I don't think you can describe the power you feel while operating a world-class monster truck."

Reportedly, Malone's truck will boast No. 32, his jersey number. The truck is scheduled to compete in sanctioned Monster Jams throughout the United States and Canada.
