Florida official wants to keep truckers in the right lane

A county commissioner in southern Florida’s Palm Beach County has proposed that trucks be restricted to one lane of I-95 in the county, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Jan. 15.

The commissioner, Burt Aaronson, says his proposal is designed to cut down on accidents between cars and trucks on the highway.

In addition, officials at two government agencies – the state Department of Transportation and the Palm Beach County Metropolitan Planning Organization – have indicated they support the proposal, which would keep trucks in the right lane of the roadway.

Nine people died in accidents that involved trucks in the county in 2000, which the newspaper, citing figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said was the third highest number of any county in the state.
