A New York state correction officer pleaded guilty last week to second-degree vehicular manslaughter in an accident that killed a truckdriver 13 months ago. The trucker had pulled onto the shoulder to check his load.

Harry Salerno Jr., of Glenville, NY, pleaded guilty to the Dec. 22, 2000, accident in which his Dodge Durango drifted from its lane and hit Robert Pinckney of Grahamsville. Authorities said Salerno, a lieutenant at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Marcy, was off-duty and had been drinking.

Salerno will be sentenced Feb. 27. He has reportedly been suspended and his employment will be terminated effective on his sentencing date.
