In 2012, Giving Tuesday was set aside to celebrate generosity and charitable giving after the commercialized frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Trucking gives a lot. They give time, money and effort equating to millions of charitable contribution dollars each year. The industry is well-known for year-round generosity to causes that range from assisting with pet transport to helping families reunite with deceased relative’s remains.
Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to share some of the smaller, less publicized organizations that don’t have marketing budgets but still do great work. The grass-roots concept of sharing local and preferred charities with family and friends through the power of social media has blossomed from a national Day of Giving to a global effort.
Large corporate sponsors take the opportunity to match donations made on Giving Tuesday.
Facebook is partnering with Pay Pal, to match a total of up to $7 million in donations made on Facebook to eligible U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Charities with sponsors or matching grants can benefit immensely from the generosity shown today.
As always, it’s prudent to be aware of where your donations actually go. All 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations are required to provide an open-book account of their financial status. Guidestar provides a comprehensive searchable list of nonprofit organizations by state.
