The Spirit heads to Kenly, N.C.

There is a lighthouse beacon drawing OOIDA’s touring tractor-trailer from Ashland, Va., to Kenly, N.C.

The Spirit of the American Trucker is scheduled Nov. 2-4 to be at the Kenly 95 Petro. It is at Exit 106 off of I-95

The Kenly 95 is known for its 65-foot-tall lighthouse welcoming truckers. It is also the site of the annual East Coast Truckers Jamboree. The seventh annual Jamboree is planned for May 9-11.

The truck stop’s doors opened to the public in 1980 as Truckland Truckstop. It became a Petro franchise in 2010.

Two years ago, in late 2016, a 23,000-sqaure-foot Super Truck Showroom was opened. The showroom has two trucks on display, The Prowler and Crown of the Coast.

There are 350 parking spots there. The Kenly 95 is part of the Iowa 80 Group, which has truck service centers in Walcott, Iowa; Joplin, Mo.; and Oak Grove, Mo.

The Johnston County Visitors Bureau touts the food court at Kenly 95 as a great place to take the family.

We are in tobacco country here in Kenly. The Tobacco Farm Life Museum is about 3 miles away on U.S. Highway 301. Kenly also is home to the Southern National Motorsports Park. A NASCAR racetrack. That is 6 miles from Kenly 95, heading northeast on U.S. 301.

Kenly is about 40 miles southeast of downtown Raleigh, N.C. and 60 miles northeast on I-95 of downtown Fayetteville, N.C. Greenville, N.C., is about 50 miles east.

Parking was a common complaint among truckers in Virginia, Jon said. Not just Virginia, though. That is why Land Line Staff Writer Tyson Fisher began his recurring blog The Parking Zone. Check out the most recent edition to see the skirmishes the NIMBY contingent have pitched. You might find yourself asking how is it they want the stuff but not what delivers it?

Whenever you see The Spirit tour truck, go say hello to Jon Osburn, skipper of The Spirit. He enjoys visiting about the Association’s activities and current issues. You also can join or renew your OOIDA membership for $10 off the regular price there. Also, you can get vouchers for flu, shingles and pneumonia vaccines from Jon at The Spirit.
