Residents in Anaheim, Calif., are keeping a close watch on the Canyon Fire, which has already burned about 2,000 acres and is 6 miles away as of publication time. CalTrans is urging motorists to find alternate routes for State Route 91 in Corona, as traffic along the freeway has been significantly affected.
As of 10 a.m. PDT on Sept. 26, there was no immediate threat to Anaheim. However, wind shifts could push the fire closer to the neighborhood of Anaheim Hills, a population of about 55,000 people.
According to the Orange County Fire Authority, one home had been damaged and the trailer on a semi-truck had been destroyed. The tractor-trailer fire that occurred on Monday, Sept. 25, caused a severe backup on eastbound State Route 91 near State Route 71.
More than 900 firefighters were on the scene on Tuesday morning with the fire at 5 percent containment. Evacuations are in place on the south side of Green River Road, from the State Route 91 freeway to Trudy Way (near Skyline Drive Trail). No vehicles are allowed in that area. The general west Corona is under a voluntary evacuation order.
Road closures are in place throughout Corona. As of press time, SR 91 was still open. However Green River Road was still closed from SR 91 to Lincoln Avenue.
