The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to remind the trucking community that there is still plenty of time to comment on its notice of proposed rulemaking regarding carrier safety fitness determination, which was first published in January.
During a news briefing on Thursday, Joe DeLorenzo, director of the FMCSA’s office of enforcement and compliance, said that the agency decided on the proposed rule in part because the current system is taxing on the current, limited resources available for enforcement.
OOIDA has criticized the new proposed plan, which calls for tying safety fitness determination to CSA safety data. The data, OOIDA says, is flawed and should be fixed before moving ahead with any new rules that rely on it.
The comment period is open until June 23.
