WSDOT needs truckers' input for truck parking survey

With a major truck parking issue needing to be resolved, the Washington State Department of Transportation has developed a plan and needs input from truckers. WSDOT is asking truckers who drive in the state to complete its latest truck parking survey.

WSDOT’s Truck Parking Strategic Plan will address parking in a variety of areas, including private truck stops, rest areas, weight stations, highway ramps, private parking lots and other areas. The survey is seeking answers needed to assess what types of trucks are driving through the state, which corridors are being traveled, and overall parking needs and issues.

The survey comes at a pivotal point as the city of North Bend is trying to make permanent an interim amendment that will not only prevent the development of new truck parking spaces but also will disable the lone truck stop in town from expanding. City officials have claimed in public hearings that the state and federal government are not doing their part to fund parking in the region.

“The lack of adequate truck parking is a problem nationwide and we’re seeing just how divisive it can be in the City of North Bend,” said Mike Matousek, OOIDA state legislative affairs director. “WSDOT is soliciting information from drivers on parking needs in the state to develop a truck parking strategic plan so this is a great opportunity for OOIDA members to get involved in the process.  If you operate in Washington State, it would benefit you to take the survey.”

On April 24, 2008, WSDOT released results from a similar survey in its Washington State Truck Parking Survey Summary Report. Eight years later the problem continues.

In the 2008 report, WSDOT concluded truck parking was unavailable, overcrowded and too far apart. Urban areas and Snoqualmie Pass were determined to be most in need of parking. When asked for the top three choices for additional parking, truckers named Seattle, Tacoma, Federal Way, North Bend and Spokane as areas that needed to be addressed.

WSDOT could not immediately be reached for comment.
