Scholarship committee pays tribute to OOIDA’s Mary Johnston

OOIDA lost an integral member of its family with the passing of the Association’s First Lady, Mary Johnston, who lost her two-year battle with leukemia on Thursday, Oct. 16.

As a way to pay tribute to Mary for her tireless efforts in fighting for the rights of truckers and helping to build the Association into what it is today, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association’s Scholarship Committee announced on Friday, Oct. 17, that it was renaming the scholarship fund in her honor. The fund will now be called the OOIDA-Mary Johnston Scholarship Fund.

OOIDA Scholarship Committee Chairman Bill Rode of Eagle, ID, said this is just one small way his committee can pay their respects to a lady who did so much for the Association.

“I can’t even begin to express what great respect I had for Mary Johnston; she was just an amazing person,” he said. “Renaming the scholarship fund is just a small way we can honor her for what she did for OOIDA members. No one who knew her can say she didn’t fight and scratch every step of the way to get truckers what they were due. She was fearless like that.”

For the past 11 years, the scholarship committee has provided financial assistance to more than 51 children, grandchildren and legal dependents of OOIDA members who want to go on to college or trade school after high school but who need a little help.

The Association is suggesting that memorial donations be made in Mary’s honor to the OOIDA-Mary Johnston Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to Owner-Operator Foundation Inc. and mailed to:
