The generosity of truck drivers supporting OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops Telethon never ceases to amaze people.
The first two years of the telethon raised $97,000 to go toward the purchase and shipping of care packages to service men and women serving in active duty overseas.
“We know truck drivers are very patriotic and supportive of the military,” said Land Line Now Host Mark Reddig. “But the overwhelming generosity the first two years surprised even us.”
During this week, 10 percent of renewal and new membership fees will be matched by the Association. Land Line Now, the association’s official radio show on Sirius XM satellite radio, the Road Dog channel, will promote the telethon during its regularly scheduled broadcasts, 7-8 p.m. Eastern. New and renewal memberships will be discounted from $45 to $25, 10 percent of which will go towards the care package funds.
All of the money raised during the week of the telethon goes 100 percent toward the purchase of items for the care packages and shipping.
Some of the items included in the care packages sent in past years were self-heating coffees, socks, personal care items and some fun stuff like playing cards and Frisbees.
There were 3,900 troops who benefited from the 65-pound care packages – packed with enough stuff to serve an entire unit – in 2009. The goal is to be able to match that number again in 2010.
There are several ways to participate in the telethon – by joining the Association, renewing your membership or simply making a donation:
