Truckers for Troops: building our list, checking it twice

| 11/13/2009

OOIDA’s third annual Truckers for the Troops Telethon begins this year on Dec. 7, which is Pearl Harbor Day. The telethon will broadcast via Land Line Now, the Association’s radio show on Sirius XM satellite radio.

During the event, Association dues (new and renewals) will be discounted from their normal $45 to only $25 for an annual membership. Ten percent of the membership fees collected during the telethon will be matched by the Association to pay for care packages to be sent to U.S. troops stationed overseas.

OOIDA’s Media Spokesperson Norita Taylor announced this week that the Association has begun building its list of recipients. And this year, as always, we invite you to send in the name and address of anyone who’s serving overseas that you think would enjoy receiving a package to share with their fellow soldiers.

To get the name of your loved one or friend on our list, call OOIDA at 1-800-444-5791 and ask for Nikki Johnson Ext. 1609 or Connie Becraft, Ext. 1239. You can also e-mail them at or We’ll need the full mailing address and, just for our own information, we’d like to know your relationship with that soldier.

A reminder from Taylor: Please encourage your family members, especially the kids, to create handmade cards and handwritten letters to include in the boxes we ship overseas. We’ve done that in the past, and it goes over big with the troops. Send those to Norita Taylor at OOIDA, 1 NW OOIDA Drive, Grain Valley, MO 64029.

In the past two years, the telethon has raised more than $96,000 and touched more than 6,400 soldiers overseas with care packages from truckers. After the event, OOIDA will arrange and coordinate shipping the care packages.
