Carnegie Medal presentation to take place at Truck Show Latino

| 10/14/2009

Colorado owner-operator Jorge Orozco-Sanchez will be awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism at noon Saturday at the 2009 Truck Show Latino. The ceremony will take place at the Goodyear Highway Hero booth No. 533 as part of the 2009 Truck Show Latino, Oct. 17-18 at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recognized Jorge in March of this year with the 26th Goodyear North American Highway Hero Award, in recognition of his effort in saving two young girls after a horrific highway accident last October. Jorge, who is a member of OOIDA, will be in the Goodyear Tire booth No. 342 both days of the show.

Jorge is one of 20 people in the U.S. and Canada to receive the Carnegie honor.

More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the show. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Be sure to visit the booth of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association to meet OOIDA people and get information on the benefits of membership. You can join OOIDA at the show for a special rate of $25. OOIDA’s tour truck, “The Spirit of the American Trucker,” will also be there.

Representatives from First Observer will be on hand, offering information on the program and training material. First Observer is a highway security program, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Administration and administered by the Transportation Security Administration. Its mission is to promote the security of our critical infrastructure within the United States by training people to observe, assess and report risks and security breaches. OOIDA is a partner in this program.

New this year, OOIDA member Frank Pangburn with Truckin’ For Kids is taking over the show-truck competition. The event will be sponsored by 10-4 Magazine. This is an indoor event, and space is extremely limited. If you intend to enter, download the entry form and fax it to 650-349-5169 today. All show trucks must arrive on Friday, Oct. 16, for parking and check-in.

Among the seminars offered in both Spanish and English are two by CARB: “Are Your Trucks Compliant with State Laws?” and “Driving toward a Cleaner Future: Important Facts for Truck Owners & Operators.”

The Texas Chrome Shop booth will feature the Mendez brothers’ Project 1 Peterbilt, which won Best in Show recently.
