Corzine aggressive tolling plan ‘politically dead’

Gov. Jon Corzine plans to revise his aggressive proposal to increase tolls on some of the nation’s busiest toll roads. Corzine has reportedly declared his proposed 15-year, 800-percent toll increase “politically dead.”

Advisers to the governor are currently working on a revised plan, according to numerous media reports.

Corzine had proposed toll increases on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway to pay down at least half of the state’s $32 billion in debts.

Critics of the proposal have said Corzine sent the wrong message when he said that it’s OK to run up debts and pay them off later using toll increases.

Since his state of the state speech in January, Corzine has promised to bring an aggressive debt-reduction plan to state lawmakers. The governor is closing in on a June 15 date to present his budget for the next fiscal year.
