Six people have died so far after what was described as a “packed” church bus rear-ended a tractor-trailer parked alongside Interstate 20 near Tallulah, LA, Oct. 13, CNN reported.

According to police authorities quoted by the news network, the bus was filled with senior citizens from First Baptist Church in Eldorado, TX. The driver of the tractor-trailer had pulled to the side of the road and was waiting for help after a breakdown.

The accident, which occurred at about 11 a.m. CDT, shut down part of the highway as emergency workers used the Jaws of Life to extricate victims from the bus. The truck driver, who was hauling cotton, was not hurt. Nine people on the bus were hurt, press reports said.

Investigators told The Associated Press that the bus driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The site of the accident is not far from the Mississippi River in the northeast portion of Louisiana. Victims were taken to a hospital in Vicksburg, MS, just across the river, CNN reported.
