International offering 'virtual rumble strips' on Class 8 trucks

International Truck and Engine Corp. is offering a lane-departure warning system on Class 8 trucks that emits a distinctive rumble strip sound if the truck unintentionally crosses lane markings.

International recently said it intended to offer the systems as an aftermarket option to enhance safety and security on its heavy-duty trucks.

In a related development, International Oct. 9 announced the purchase of 38 of its trucks that were built with the guidance technology by Logex Corp., a cryogenic liquid and compressed gases transportation company based in Orange, CA.

Developed by Interis Inc., Anaheim, CA, the system uses image-recognition software and a windshield-mounted camera to monitor the relative position of the truck. If the truck crosses lane markings, the unit automatically emits a rumble strip sound on the right or left side depending on the direction of travel, alerting the driver to make a correction. Use of the truck's turn signals automatically overrides the system.
