Alabama
has replaced 100 bridges that were declared unsafe, and is about
to commence work on more than 340 others, The Birmingham News reported.
The
effort is part of a $250 million road improvement program that,
in addition to other work, identified more than 1,000 unsafe bridges
in the state that should be replaced, the newspaper said. In addition
to those already replaced and those about to see work, planning
is under way on 300 others.
Enough
money is available to replace 700 of the more than 1,000 bridges,
state officials told the newspaper.
