Iowa approves bypass in northwestern city

A nine-mile, four-lane bypass will be built to carry state Route 60 around the city of Sibley in far northwestern Iowa, The Quad City Times reported recently.

The city is roughly 56 miles east of the intersection of I-29 and I-90 at Sioux Falls, SD.

The plan was approved Sept. 16 by the Iowa Department of Transportation, the newspaper reported, but construction will wait for federal funds. Work should start in 2005.

Twenty-nine percent of the 4,000 vehicles that use the road daily are expected to be freight-hauling trucks, The Times said.
