Rock fall abatement project to close section of U.S. 6

Colorado will close U.S. 6 through Clear Creek Canyon for a project designed to prevent rock falls, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced recently.

The highway will be closed between state Highway 119 and U.S. 40 from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, the department said in a statement.

Workers will install rock reinforcements and wire mesh on the canyon walls above the highway, just west of Tunnel Five. The crane used in the work requires both lanes of the highway, forcing the closure.

The state estimates that the section of road will be closed through mid-October. The section of U.S. 6 involved is in a mountainous area just off I-70 roughly 30 miles west of central Denver.
