OOIDA member Nancy Fisher has been named Trucker Buddy of the Month.

Trucker Buddy is a program that matches drivers with elementary school classes. The drivers correspond with students about their travels on a regular basis as part of an effort to aid students in learning geography, history, math and other subjects through the trucker’s experiences. Roughly 4,000 drivers take part in the program, helping more than 4,400 elementary classes throughout the world.

Fisher, a company driver for Wiseway Motor Freight, which is located in her hometown of Hudson, WI, corresponds with a K-5 special education class in Swanton, OH. She has been corresponding with Annette Sack’s Fulton Elementary School class for four years.

“Nancy has gone up and beyond what I anticipated a Trucker Buddy to do for my students,” Sack said in a statement.

Fisher sends more than 100 postcards during the school year, and she takes the time to respond to each student’s questions. One of the bright spots in the relationship is when Fisher brings her dog, Harley, and her truck to the school so the children can meet them in person and check out her rig.

“Nancy deserves this award,” according to student Travis. “She is so nice and she cares about us.”

Another student, Charlie, nominated Fisher by writing “She is very nice,” on a sheet of paper, repeating the word very more than three dozen times for emphasis.

Fisher will receive a personalized jacket, along with a check for $300 to spend on the class and $200 in Trucker Buddy merchandise, compliments of TMI-MultiMedia. She will be given a copy of “For the Long Haul” by Donde Publishing, as well as an Accident Photo Pak to carry in her truck.

The class will receive a CrossCountry USA game from Ingenuity Works, which will help them learn more about how trucks move freight across the nation.

The only criteria to be a Trucker Buddy is to be a professional driver willing to send a postcard each week to an elementary class. Drivers can apply online at or by calling 1-800-MY BUDDY.

Trucker Buddy depends on corporate sponsors such as TMI-MultiMedia to fund the program.

Major contributors include: platinum level sponsors, ManComm, Transcore, ProTrucker and Over the Road magazines; gold level sponsors American Graphics Group, Delphi, Kenworth, Midnight Trucking Radio Network, OOIDA, Truckin’ Bozo, Mike Ryan Motorsports, and Wal-Mart; and silver level sponsors ArvinMeritor, Detroit Diesel, OTR-Canada and
