Work completed on I-40 bridge

Crews have finished repairs on an interstate bridge near Webbers Falls, OK, where 14 people fell to their deaths after it was hit by a towboat in May, AP reports. Traffic was to resume July 29 over the bridge.

The victims were to be remembered upon the bridge reopening, said Webbers Falls Mayor Jewell Horne. Cars and trucks plunged into the Arkansas River on May 26 after a towboat pushing two barges slammed into the bridge along Interstate 40, collapsing part of it. Since then, as many as 17,000 cars and trucks have been rerouted each day through Webbers Falls and other nearby towns as construction crews worked around the clock to repair the collapsed span.
