Texas lawmaker vows to introduce port legislation

A Texas lawmaker has vowed to introduce legislation addressing truckers' concerns about waiting in long lines to pick up or drop off containers at the Port of Houston. The legislature is scheduled to reconvene in January 2003.

Supporters of Rep. Joe Moreno's (D-Houston) legislation say it would not only improve productivity for truckers, but also would cut down on air pollution generated by the long idle times and increase safety standards on surrounding highways. Calls by Land Line to Rep. Moreno's office for details on how the proposed bill would eliminate long lines have not been returned.

Other legislation reportedly being considered when lawmakers gather involves overweight containers, improperly labeled containers, the repair and maintenance of truck chassis and port credentialing requirements.
