OOIDA member victim of shooting: police say possibly gang-related

| 5/24/2002

On May 23 at about 3:00 p.m., OOIDA member John Thompson was driving on I-40 just west of Albuquerque, NM, in heavy traffic when he spotted a car driving erratically.

According to Thompson, the car went from the hammer lane to the far right and pulled parallel with his truck. "I looked straight at the driver," Thompson said. "He looked me straight in the eyes and pulled a pistol out and aimed at me." Thompson said the teen had "the deadest eyes I have ever seen, it was as if he didn't see me. Then he pulled out a pistol."

The youth reportedly fired two shots that blew out the passenger window, but missed Thompson. Thompson pulled to the side of the highway and called 9-1-1.

Officer Andrea Ortiz of the Albuquerque Police Department took the report and told Thompson the shooting was "probably because school is out." Thompson told Land Line he said, "College?" Ortiz replied, "No, high school. It's probably gang-related. And it probably won't be the last time either."

The car involved in the shooting is described as a newer dark blue sports model driven by a teen, probably Hispanic with very short hair and a moustache.

Anyone with information can call the Field Services Department of the Albuquerque Police at (505) 897-0500.
