An Illinois couple has been honored as Trucker Buddy drivers of the month for their work with grade school classrooms.
For the past seven years, Tom and Sandy Peters, of Oswego, IL, have been corresponding with second and third grade class at Lincoln Prairie Elementary in Hoffman Estates, IL.
"The match I received back in 1995 turned out to be the start of a strong partnership that has also blossomed into a wonderful friendship," teacher Tracy Gajdos wrote in her letter to nominate the Peters. "Tom and Sandy care so much for all the children in my classroom. Each year they do more and more to get the kids involved in reading, writing, researching and geography."
Ms. Gajdos recalled when her class was studying rocks, Tom and Sandy pitched in. "They got us some cool sparkly rocks," wrote student Samantha."They send us cool stuff from all around the country." Samantha added she also enjoyed being able to see the cab of the Peters' big rig."They have a very big truck and were nice enough to let us go inside it."
Tom and Sandy, who deliver household goods as company drivers for Prager Storage and Van, Naperville, IL, are two of more than 4,400 drivers who correspond with more than 4,600 classrooms. "Tom and Sandy not only help teach students math, writing and geography," said Ellen Voie, Trucker Buddy executive director, "but they promote a positive side of the trucking industry to these future drivers."
