Truck size and weight subject of May 29 public listening session

Trucking professionals have a chance to be heard and to provide valuable input as part of a federal study of truck size and weight. The U.S. Department of Transportation plans to host a public input session May 29 in Washington, DC, to collect input for the congressionally mandated study.

The DOT intends to present its Comprehensive Truck Size and Weight Limits Study to Congress sometime next year as part of a mandate in the current highway bill.

Specifically, the agency is researching the effects of truck size and weight on highway safety and crash rates, pavement and bridge conditions, cost effectiveness and efficiency. The DOT is also seeking comments about “alternative truck configurations,” which may include longer combination vehicles, or LCVs, such as double or triple trailers.

OOIDA plans to be part of the conversation and encourages members and nonmembers to be involved as well.

“Who could possibly know more about the operational realities of truck size and weight than the men and women drivers who meet these challenges every single day,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer said.

A Federal Highway Administration official who attended the spring meeting of the OOIDA Board of Directors last month also urged participation.

The four-hour listening session is scheduled from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Wednesday, May 29, at U.S. DOT headquarters, 1200 New Jersey Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20590.
