Westbound Interstate 80 was closed overnight 40 miles west of Des Moines after a farm truck hauling an excavator struck a bridge overpass at Exit 83 near the town of Casey.
A spokesman for the Iowa Department of Transportation says the agency hoped to open one westbound lane to traffic sometime on Tuesday, but not until inspectors deemed it safe.
“At best it will be one lane,” Iowa Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Bane said Tuesday morning.
Inspectors were at the scene to determine a long-term outlook for the bridge.
Westbound I-80 traffic is using the off-ramp at Exit 83 to bypass the bridge and re-entering I-80 on the other side.
In a press release, the DOT said the load was “oversize.” Bane would not comment on the vehicle dimensions, only that the load was an excavator being moved by a farm operation.
“The legal height of the bridge was over 14 feet,” he added.
No word yet on whether the vehicle operator will be cited.
Last month, a dump truck with its box in the raised position struck a beam on the north end of the same bridge causing a temporary closure. That driver was cited for a height infraction.
