OOIDA’s sixth annual Truckers for Troops – scheduled for Dec. 3-7 this year – is one of the Association’s favorite events. The effort will be raising money to pack and send care packages to our men and women in the armed forces who are stationed in combat zones.
During Truckers for Troops week, new and renewal memberships will be discounted from $45 to $25, a savings of $20. Ten percent of each member’s dues paid will go toward the care package funds. Those funds will be matched by the Association.
A broadcast “telethon” is planned for each day, Dec. 3-7, on OOIDA’s Land Line Now satellite radio show.
OOIDA staff and volunteers pack the packages with items like snacks, socks, foot powder, body soap, books, magazines, pens, envelopes, games, Frisbees, silly string, caps, undershirts plus signed cards and letters. Last year, OOIDA shipped out 341 huge boxes, packed and sent from OOIDA’s Grain Valley, MO, headquarters. The boxes reached more than 3,948 soldiers and 100 military dogs.
Last year’s effort raised $73,560 with an unprecedented level of support from truckers. The campaign had a head start with a generous donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000.
